Twenty Nine Years Ago Today…

… a young army lieutenant is posted to the frontiers of Agusan, in Eastern Mindanao. He is part of a Special Forces Battalion sent to address a growing insurgency threat in the area…

… he meets a young lady, a fresh graduate from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, in one of the rare occasions he visits Davao City. He is determined to know more about her, particularly because she came from a school with a reputation for developing highly-radicalized students…

… they would start to engage in friendly ‘mental jousts’; she with her politicized views, he from a supposedly ‘reactionary’ background…

… but the mutual respect was born; as the communication became more frequent…

… he would fall in love. and he would pursue her. Gently, yet relentlessly…

… but she would have to leave Davao for Manila to pursue her dream of having a successful career…

… the distance would be a problem, she thought…

… but fate would be kind, for he is ordered to report to Manila quite frequently for a variety of reasons…

… the relationship blossoms…

… they get married…

… the kids arrive, four in all…

… and then, through time, they outgrow their kiddie chatter…

… it’s been 29 years now…

… of ups and downs, of laughter and tears…

… but by and large, it has been a good, good life…

… indeed, we’ve lived, we’ve loved, we’ve learned, and we are leaving a legacy…

… HAPPY 29TH ANNIVERSARY, LOVE!!! Thanks for the wonderful memories. Here’s to another lifetime with you by my side.
