After Jackie Sawicki buried the team’s 6th penalty shoot, it was now up to Filipinas’ goalie Olivia McDaniel to step up. When she finally snared Vietnam’s 6th attempt, pandemonium broke loose. The Filipinas, given up for lost right after their very first game, barely surviving so many close-to-insurmountable challenges, had won the match 6-5! And the title to boot.
With calm precision and unwavering belief, the Filipinas stood tall under the most intense spotlight, converting their penalties and denying Vietnam’s final attempt. Olivia’s heroic block sealed a historic, emotional accomplishment. The Philippines is now the SEA Games women’s football champions for the first time. Among the Philippines worthy gold medals, this was the one to savor most, ever so sweetly.
But beyond the scoreboard, there is much to be uncovered. The victory symbolizes the team’s growth, and the maturation of a women’s program that has faced so many challenges, infrastructural gaps, and periods of doubt.
