In 1975, the Philippine Basketball Association was born, founded by 9 teams that bolted the MICAA in a bold move, leaving the BAP and saying goodbye to their amateur days. The PBA would become the first professional basketball league in Asia, and the second oldest in the world, next only to the NBA.
I’d like to invite all basketball-crazy fans out there – whether you’re from the Philippines, Japan, Indonesia or not – to come and join us as we celebrate the greatness and beauty of the sport. And what better way than to personally watch the best players don their national colors in a friendly joust. Cheer for your team, and if you don’t have a team representing your country, cheer for your favorite players or favorite country.
The FIBA World Cup 2023 is just days away from kicking off. Coach Chot Reyes and his staff still have to complete the Philippine Team line-up. At present, there remain 16 of the country’s best cagers battling it out for the honor to represent the Philippines.
On 25 August 2023, all eyes will be in Manila, Jakarta and Naha in Okinawa as the 3 cities co-host the biggest basketball extravaganza in the world, the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. This will be the first time the World Cup will be hosted by multiple countries, namely: Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. With the introduction of a multi-country hosting scheme, the Asian tripartite won the hosting rights over the South American duo of Argentina and Uruguay in the bid conducted way back in December 2017.
This year’s Euro Basket Championship proved to be as exciting in its unpredictability and creativity. And it provided as much entertainment and joy for fans across the globe. To the organizers and players, cheers. Thanks for the great memories.
Euro basketball is on the rise. And so are the rest of the world’s caging countries. If the NBA doesn’t make a move to regain respect by sending their best talents, if its top players will not care to play ball against the rest of the world, then their game will suffer. And the mantle of invincibility will slowly be eroded. And when that happens, the allure of the NBA will surely go down.
