Mesmerizing Maragusan

Maragusan Valley, tucked away in the hinterlands of Davao de Oro (formerly known as Compostela Valley province in Eastern Mindanao), is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. This is one adventure for travelers seeking a unique, off-the-beaten-path destination. On the invitation of the province’s Tourism chief, the bubbly Ms Christine Dompor, my wife and I brought the family to this great hidden frontier to savor a unique, once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Known as the ‘Summer Capital of Davao Region’ for its cold climate, and further endowed with its stunning natural beauty and abundant water wonders, this enchanting valley boasts of a total of 52 waterfalls, each with its unique charm and allure. Among these fantastic cascades, Tagbibinta and Pyalitan Falls stand out as two of the more captivating and picturesque. Hence, with the limited time in our hands, Christine chose these 2 falls for our family adventure.

Our first destination was Pyalitan Falls, a hidden gem in the Valley offering an adventure-of-an-experience for those willing to explore secluded wonders. Nestled in a remote corner of the valley, this waterfall had us in awe with its wild waters and pristine surroundings. The journey to reach Pyalitan Falls was quite challenging, with its strong water flow and the big treacherous rocks. But lucky for us seniors, the local government officials had deemed it fit to construct steel stairs to the more commanding views that Pyalitan offered. And the breathtaking sight of the cascading waters against the backdrop of a dense virgin forest made the journey truly worthwhile.

Pyalitan is isolated, powerful and veiled with mystic aura. It remains shrouded with mystery due to its remote location. And there’s the challenge of the tricky climb. Yet the cool waters awaken your senses, and you discover a hidden strength in you that makes you feel younger, and make you crave for more challenges ahead.

Next, we explored Tagbibinta Falls. Tagbibinta, with its multi-tiered cascades plunging into crystal-clear pools, offers a serene and tranquil setting for visitors wishing to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. The falls has 13 unique cascades, with the last plunging around 70 feet to its base. The site is less tricky than Pyalitan, and it is still continuously being developed by the local government, with cottages-for-rent, clean toilets, and a picnic ground. The falls is sacred ground for the indigenous Mansaka community of Maragusan. It is said that when invoked, the spirits living in this lush jungle can heal sick people brought to the place. Thus visitors are told not to be too noisy, lest they disturb and annoy the spirits.

Our quick dip in the cool waters of Tagbibinta re-energized me once again. Quite a mystery indeed, for I didn’t feel tired at all despite the strong water-flow, and the dangerous rocks around us. The lush greenery surrounding the falls added to the enchanting atmosphere, somehow making it the perfect spot to re-energize and rejuvenate. The mesmerizing sight and the loud, yet soothing sound of the streaming waters create a jungle ambiance that left me awestruck, amazed and pleasantly rejuvenated.

After the unique experience with its enchanting waterfalls, we proceeded to explore Maragusan Valley’s other awesome sites and experiences.

Maragusan is also home to Kanlawig Hot Spring Resort, a natural wonder that offers visitors another unique, rejuvenating experience. Cozily settled amidst the scenic wonders of the valley, this hot spring is known for its therapeutic properties and relaxing ambiance. The mineral-rich waters of the hot spring resort are believed to have healing benefits, making it a popular destination for those seeking relief from various ailments or simply looking to unwind and de-stress.

One of the few hot springs in this once-NPA infested area, Kanlawig has played a significant role in the resurgence of the region’s tourism industry. Attracting visitors from near and far, this natural wonder has been a tremendous help in boosting the local economy and creating new opportunities for the residents of Maragusan Valley. This hot spring allows you to find solace from your daily stresses. The spring provides healing and other positive effects, and these are medically proven. The transformation of the area from a former conflict zone to a thriving tourist destination is a testament to the resilience and determination of the local community in building a brighter future for themselves and future generations.

That night, we had a refreshing stay at the spacious residence of Herna Crawhorn, a retiree who had returned to her roots in Maragusan after decades toiling as a medical practitioner in the US of A. Waking up the following day, and watching the sunrise caress the green fields that surround her simple, yet spacious and comfortable home, we realized the blessings of abundance and serenity this beautiful treasure spot has been gifted with.

That morning, we also took time to visit the Grape Valley, another emerging tourist attraction in the valley. We also found time to visit the neighboring Ancla Farm, which offered a different allure of its own.

Maragusan Valley is indeed a place of unparalleled beauty and charm. With its enchanting waterfalls, rejuvenating hot springs, captivating landscape, plus – most importantly – the indomitable spirit of a resilient people who were once upon a time under the menacing shadow of the insurgent threat. For travelers seeking an unforgettable adventure off the beaten path, this hidden gem in the Philippines offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, unwind, and explore the wonders of the natural world, peopled by a determined lot ready to welcome you and the world. As more people discover the alluring attractions of Maragusan Valley, it is sure to become a must-visit destination for those seeking a truly immersive and unforgettable travel experience.

My warmest gratitude to the energetic Ms Christine Dompor for making our stay in the province truly memorable. Also to Ms Herna Crawhorn and the other Maragusan ladies whose hospitality and warmth made us feel so at home on this unforgettable sojourn in the province. Way to go, ladies! And cheers to the emerging tourist attraction that is Maragusan. Come visit before the waves of tourist come and spoil the fun!
