Discovering the Paradise That Is Palawan

Palawan, often heralded as the last frontier of the Philippines, is a destination that can easily captivate the heart and soul of every traveler. Known for its breathtaking landscape, pristine beaches, and vibrant ecosystem, Palawan offers a unique allure that sets it apart from other tourist attractions all over the country, and around the world. Recently, my wife Wit and I visited Palawan – El Nido in particular – where my daughter, Bianca, presently resides in. The visit allowed us to experience firsthand the magic of this tropical paradise, despite a minor accident that I encountered.

One of the most striking features of Palawan is its stunning natural beauty. The archipelago is home to some of the most picturesque landscapes on the planet. El Nido, with its dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and rich marine biodiversity, feels like stepping into a dream. During our four-day visit there, my wife and I enjoyed various short trips that brought us to experience a local farm, the local nightlife, the community’s culture center, plus the hidden lagoons, secluded beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. The views were nothing short of spectacular, and the sense of adventure was truly palpable.

In terms of biodiversity, Palawan boasts an impressive array of flora and fauna. The region is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park and Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park highlighting its ecological significance. Years before, Wit and I had explored the Subterranean River, and I have had the privilege of diving in Tubbataha during my stint in Malacanang under then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. This time though, we opted to simply go snorkeling among the colorful coral gardens in El Nido. We encountered a myriad of marine life, including sea turtles and schools of tropical fish, reinforcing the importance of conservation in these fragile ecosystems.

But Palawan is not just a feast for the eyes; it also offers a rich cultural heritage. The indigenous Tagbanua tribe contributes to the island’s unique identity. Their traditions and way of life provide visitors with an opportunity to learn more about the peculiarities and culture of the tribe. My past experience with the indigenous community when I was working with Habitat for Humanity have both been enlightening and enriching, and I have much respect for the culture, the warmth and hospitality that the local Tagbanua tribe is known for. During our time in El Nido, we also indulged in the unique cuisine fusion that combines local dishes with a foreign twist. The arrival of foreigners in El Nido – predominantly from France and Spain, and decades ago, the Vietnamese refugees after the fall of Vietnam – has contributed to a special blend of local and foreign delectables. We savored fresh seafood and traditional delicacies that were prepared with a unique taste. In El Nido, the vibrant nightlife was filled with lively bars and beachfront restaurants, many of which are owned by foreign nationals who came and just fell in love with the place. This allowed us to experience the local culture with a foreign twist, in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. The evenings were a celebration, as we mingled with fellow travelers and locals, sharing stories and laughter under the cloudless sky.

Our journey, however, was not without its challenges. Coming from a refreshing dip at the beautiful Lio Beach, I encountered a minor motorbike accident, leaving me with bruises in some parts of my body, threatening to ruin our vacation. Thankfully, nothing serious happened, although the helmet did get damaged, which means it could have been a more serious accident without that helmet. My wife and daughter were immediately there for me, and together with Bianca’s partner, Kevin, ensured that I received the necessary care – and the painkillers – to keep my spirits high. We had the boat trip scheduled for the following day – the supposed highlight of this vacation – and that night, I thought we would have to cancel the trip with all my aches and pains.

But thanks to the tender loving care I got that night, I was feeling good-to-go the following day. We then decided to proceed with the boat trip as planned. Instead of letting the accident overshadow our beautiful Palawan sojourn, we chose to embrace the moments we had left in El Nido. And we didn’t regret it! We found solace in the natural beauty surrounding us, and the sea felt like a special balm to my aches and pains. And watching the spectacular sunset as we slowly returned to port reminded me of a scene from the movie ‘Titanic’. Truly, with the backdrop of the darkening mountains, and the calm sea underneath, this was a scene to die for.

After that memorable visit to El Nido, we then proceeded to Astoria Palawan for a more private respite. Nestled between the lush greenery and pristine beaches, the resort offers a tranquil atmosphere perfect for extreme relaxation. The view of the ocean was stunning. They had an infinity pool, where we enjoyed the sensation of the soothing sunrise. The resort’s restaurant served delectable local cuisine, and we had great evening shows. After that fast and furious adventure in El Nido, it was time for some old-fashioned rest and recreation just lazing on the beach or by the pool. Astoria Palawan truly embodies a perfect blend of luxury and natural beauty, making our stay unforgettable. After another 2 days in Astoria, it was now off to Puerto Princesa for our trip back home.

For me, Palawan stands out among other tourist destinations for several reasons. First is its commitment to environmental preservation. The local government and various organizations, having seen how development has threatened to ruin many destination places, work tirelessly to maintain the natural beauty of the islands. This ensures that tourism does not come at the expense of ecological balance. This awareness and dedication to sustainability enhances the overall experience, allowing travelers to engage with nature abundantly.

Moreover, the accessibility of Palawan’s attractions is another factor that enhances its appeal. Unlike other popular destinations that may be overcrowded, Palawan offers a sense of tranquility and seclusion. The islands are less commercialized, allowing for a more authentic experience. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature without the distractions of mass tourism, making it a perfect getaway for those seeking peace and relaxation.

Our journey to Palawan was a most unforgettable experience, marked by breathtaking landscapes and cultural diversity. The accident I suffered – no matter that it was minor – also provided us a great opportunity to strengthen our family bonds. Despite the challenges we faced, the mystery and allure of Palawan prevailed to gift us with a lot of cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for this remarkable destination. The combination of its natural beauty, its cultural heritage and its commitment to sustainability makes Palawan a unique travel destination. As I reflect on the lovely time I spent in El Nido, Astoria and Puerto Princesa, I brought home with me not just the memories of stunning sunsets and cool, clear waters, I brought with me the enduring spirit of adventure that Palawan inspires in everyone who come to visit.

      1. My two nurse daughters and their families – four granddaughters from three to twelve – move into our house this weekend for three days. The girls never both have Christmas off early, so we celebrate the weekend before. Thanks for asking. Enjoy your beer and the holidays.
