April 1, 1974. This was Reception Day at the Philippine Military Academy, marking a daunting doorway for me to cast away my civilian self for the disciplined regimen of the military service. I stood with more than a hundred plus new cadets, as we walked into plebe-life, unaware of the grueling trials ahead - the endless exercises, the icy commands, the drills and inspections, the relentless corrections. Yet, amid the blood, sweat and tears, that noble purpose was slowly becoming crystal clear: to create in each one of us the character of true professional soldiers.
