Remembering Super Typhoon Yolanda (Part 2)

Super Typhoon Yolanda hit landfall in the Philippines in Eastern Samar at around 4:40 in the morning. It would devastate parts of the island-provinces of Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Negros, Iloilo and Palawan. Its first landfall was at Guian, Eastern Samar, which it hit at its peak strength of roughly 285 km/hr. Continuing its wild rampage to the west, it made 5 more landfalls before emerging over the Western Philippine Seas.

The destruction caused by a rampaging storm surge can be seen in the link above. It was the storm surge that would cause so much death and destruction in Tacloban and its neighboring towns.

After Samar and Leyte, Super Typhoon Yolanda would hit the northern tip of Cebu and the island of Bantayan. Today’s story – A Seafarer’s Wife Recounts Haiyan – is about a newly-designated School Principal, who had just recently given birth; how she and her kids survived – without the husband who was away for work; and how she tended for her 3 families after the storm: her immediate family; her school officials, teachers and students; and the refugees that flooded the school after the storm.
