On 2 July 2018, in a match that was part of the 2019 Basketball World Cup Asian qualification process, the Philippines would be involved in a huge brawl against a heftier Australian national team. The game was held at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, with Australia leading comfortably 89-53 with a minute left in the 3rd quarter, when the free-for-all ensued. Nine Gilas players and 4 Aussies were ejected as a result of the brawl.
The big event that would turn the tide for the PBA would happen outside the squared arena. In September 2009, Typhoon Ondoy devastated Manila and its adjoining provinces. Floods reached a record high and damages were substantial. PBA players were very visible distributing relief goods, providing cheer and hope among the poor victims, many of whom were still temporarily housed in the evacuation centers. For most of the victims, this would be their first time to see these gentle giants in the flesh.
The 60s saw the Philippines slowly lose control of Asian cage supremacy. With the venerable Caloy Loyzaga exiting the playing court, and the other Asian nations slowly learning the rudiments of the game, Philippine cage supremacy in Asia slowly diminished.
My trip to Ireland was inspiring as well as humbling. I learned much from my gracious hosts. And I hope that the world can learn from its conflicts, and that I may share the lessons in Southern Mindanao. By recognizing our shared humanity and embracing our differences, we can create a future where peace flourishes.
In the best-ever finish by an Asian country in the international basketball arena, the Philippines captured the bronze medal in the 2nd FIBA World Championship held in Brazil in 1954. Led by our dynamic duo of Mumar and Caloy Loyzaga, the Philippines surprised the heftier American and European teams with a dazzling display of speed and skill in basketball.
As we step into 2024, the dreams for Philippine sports are ambitious yet achievable. By investing in youth development, enhancing local leagues, and promoting diverse sports, the Philippines can cultivate a thriving sports culture that not only produces champions but also inspires and unites the nation.
