It’s Showtime as the NBA Season 2026-27 Gets Underway!!!

As the NBA season starts, the landscape of the NBA wars feature a fascinating mix of solid contenders, rising juggernauts, blockbuster off-season roster overhauls and shifting power dynamics.

This early, the team to watch would have to be the Philadelphia 76ers which made a bold move by reshuffling its roster during the off-season, making themselves instant high-stakes contenders in the Eastern Conference. Key additions to the Sixers’ roster include Lebron James and Jalen Brown, who – together with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey – form a formidable first team. This is by far the biggest revamp in the off-season in the league, and it demonstrates the Sixers’ front office desire to go for the gold this time. It is now or never for the Sixers, and it could be a fitting farewell for a soon-to-retire Lebron. As for Jalen, it is an opportunity to show Boston what they will miss by releasing him.

The next team tagged as a top favorite would have to be the losing finalists last season, the San Antonio Spurs. Armed with a generational talent and a unicorn force in Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs enter the season having addressed their weakest link, the power forward position. The arrival of veteran Tobias Harris adds size and experience to this young squad. After falling short last year by a proverbial hair, the Spurs’ blend of elite rim protection, budding young playmakers, and Victor Wembanyama’s continued ascension – plus their new-found playoff experience – has them poised to stay on top of the West.

But if there is one team that can go eyeball-to-eyeball with the Spurs, it would have to be the equally youthful, and even more experienced former champs, the Oklahoma City Thunder. It will be recalled that the Spurs only managed to squeeze past the Thunder in the playoffs due to an unfortunate injury to top guard Jalen Williams. With Jalen healthy, expect the Thunder to be right in the middle of the playoff fight, with former MVP Shae Gilgeous Alexander leading this year’s redemption campaign. This should be an interesting rematch for the Western crown, if the Thunder and the Spurs – co-favorites for the Western kingdom – are both healthy at the end of the regular season.

Finally, there’s the defending champs, the New York Knicks. Having broken their long title drought, the reigning champs return with their core of Jalen Brunson, Karl Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges. The Knicks clicked right in time for the Finals, and they are widely expected to be the team to beat in the East. If they recapture that late playoff invincibility potion, they are a top choice to contend for the regular title as well as the NBA Cup, which they also won last year.

Other significant teams expected to make deep playoff runs include the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat. The Celtics traded Jalen Brown but acquired veteran Paul George, signalling a strategic shift for the franchise as they deal with the salary cap. The Heat made major waves by trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, making them instant contenders once again.

Having said all that, the San Antonio Spurs remain my top choice to take the 2027 crown. This early, Victor Wembanyama has become the overwhelming favorite to take the regular season MVP award. His growing maturity, his athletic ability, his court IQ – all these and more – make him a defensive anchor that can remake all offensive game plans, while operating as a nightmare mismatch on the offensive end.

Despite falling short to the Knicks in the Finals last season, the team has elevated its game with the experience, and the burning desire now to work harder on their unfinished business. The team made only 1 minor change by adding Harris to their roster to provide more experience at the 4-spot. This will make them benefit from the natural internal synergy and the continuity around their core.

I foresee that their primary roadblock will not come from the east, but rather from the same OKC Thunder that gave them a worthy fight for the Western Conference title last year. The Thunder is arguably the deepest, most well-oiled 2-way roster in the league today. They remain a formidable force that would make worthy champs – with a possibility of creating a dynasty – based on the roster it currently has. The team is 2-3 layers solid on all positions, and they are a young group, capable of competing for many more seasons in the league.

As the hardwood lights up and the new season tips off, the league finds itself at an interesting crossroads. We are looking at a convergence of eras: the steady, calculating dominance of homegrown powerhouses like OKC and San Antonio, colliding head-on with aggressive high-stakes gambles – from the Sixers and the Heat. Add in a veteran Knicks squad eager to prove that their emergence as last year’s champs was not a fluke.

The stage is set. Will the youthful, battle-tested continuity template of the West’s elite hold firm? Or will newly-minted “superteams” click fast enough to steal the spotlight? Will the team chemistry work? With new teams come new possibilities, new strategies, new partnerships. This season promises another unforgettable theatre of star power, redemption schemes and perhaps, the birth of budding careers and team dynasties.

Come and watch, as the NBA season 2026-27 kicks off this October 20.
