This weekend, the NBA offers a mini-series that will serve as a preliminary act to the playoffs. The Portland Trail Blazers duke it up with the Memphis Grizzlies in a win-or-die affair to determine who takes the last spot in the Western Conference playoffs. With all but the Western 8th seed set, the playoffs will commence next week. But before that, here’s a bit of an appetizer.
There’s an old song that goes: “what a difference a day makes, 24 little hours.” Yup, in a matter of hours, the leaderboard has rocked and rolled. It is the homestretch, and it’s the Blazers – with the unstoppable guns of gametime Damian Lillard – blazing the trail for the last seat to the playoffs. Indeed, what a difference a Dame makes!
It will be an exciting last 2 minutes for the 4 hopefuls. Each one striving to notch 2 Ws in 2 forays, each one hoping for the other to tumble. Each one bloodied and extremely exhausted, yet aware they must drag their bodies to the arena once again. Two more times. Who will the angels favor?
This year’s NBA playoffs will be very demanding and very unpredictable. At the start of the season, we saw new line-ups with new star alignments. Then we saw the season shaken hard by the corona crisis. Coming back, the season was shortened, and the restart games confined to a single site, taking away the traditional homecourt advantage for the regular season race leaders, which brings forth a new dynamic to the game.
The greatest take-away from the resumption of the games is no longer about basketball. Its meaning, its very significance has transcended the game itself. The NBA has demonstrated it is capable of becoming bigger than basketball. More than the entertainment value it provides, the Restart offers a venue to promote safety protocols amid this pandemic. It provides a vehicle to promote social reforms. It provides an inspiration to the world, that by standing together, we can overcome all adversities.
