The Spurs still have the size, the athleticism, and the defensive versatility that troubled Oklahoma City throughout the season. But Game 3 exposed an uncomfortable reality: talent alone may not be enough when health becomes a factor. Bench depth becomes a big need.
This was supposed to be Oklahoma City’s moment. The Thunder had homecourt advantage. They had the newly-crowned league MVP in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. They had momentum after steamrolling through the first 2 rounds of the playoffs with identical 4-0 wipeout slates. They now have a healthy roster, including the fully recovered Jalen Williams. And still, none of that mattered.
Regardless of who wins, this much feels certain: the future of the NBA runs through Oklahoma City and San Antonio now. And the rest of the league should probably be terrified. Whosoever wins the West will win the 2026 NBA crown.
Will the Oklahoma City Thunder be the first back-to-back champs since the 2018 Golden State Warriors? Or will there be a resurgence of the ‘Bad Boys’ swag of the Detroit Pistons? Will the generational brilliance of Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio finally overpower the league? All three teams are young, talented and threatening to stay on top of the heap for the next decade or so. These and more as our favorite league witnesses a tectonic shift in power.
I predict the Spurs will outlast the defending champions OKC Thunder in an epic Western Conference Finals. They will not only reach the Finals but go all the way, capturing the title. A 2024 Rookie of the Year, Wemby is changing not just the trajectory of shots, he is changing the game. Defensively, offensively, and even psychologically.
Victor Wembanyama’s complete package of size, skill, and impact situates him as not only a transformative figure for the league – and the sport in general – but as a legitimate MVP contender this season. If he continues to refine his efficiency, avoid serious injuries, and drive winning at a high level, the case for him as MVP will definitely grow stronger as the season’s climax creeps in.
