Once again, it’s time for us to place our bets on the 2026 NBA playoffs. With the end of the 2025-26 NBA regular season, the league is witnessing a fascinating shift in power in the 2026 Playoffs. The Eastern Conference was rocked with the entry of the Detroit Pistons as top-seed with a surprising 60-22 win-loss card. The Western Conference was likewise dealt a mild surprise with the arrival of the San Antonio Spurs as the Conference 2nd-seed with an even more impressive 62-20 slate. Both the Pistons and the Spurs were virtual non-entities in the playoffs of previous years, although the Spurs’ reappearance in the playoffs had been predicted long before. In trading shots with the league’s top guns once again in this year’s playoffs, the Pistons and the Spurs are showcasing the league’s parity. They are a whiff of fresh air, and a pleasant surprise to the fans.
However, we just might see an early parting of ways for the 2 playoff rookies as the 1st round hits midstride. In the Eastern Conference, the 8th-seed Orlando Magic look hellbent on booting out the heavily-favored Pistons. Now leading their series with a 3-2 count, Paolo Banchero and the Magic are exposing Cade Cunningham and the Pistons for their lack of post-season experience. On the other hand, the Spurs have advanced to the next round of their Western Conference campaign with a sound 4-1 demolition of the 7th seed Portland Trailblazers. The Spurs lost Game 2 when Victor Wembanyama suffered a concussion. They promptly made adjustments, beating the Blazers in Game 3 despite the absence of Wembanyama, who was still under concussion protocol then. With Victor reporting back to duty for Game 4, the Blazers didn’t stand a chance.
That said, it is interesting to note that there are 6 – count that, 6 of 8!!! – 1st-round series match-ups that have gone to Game 6, another proof of the dynamism and parity in the NBA. In the east, all 4 playoff series reached Game 6, with the New York Knicks finally squeezing through over the Atlanta Hawks, while the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers play an all-or-nothing Game 7. While the Knicks, the Celtics and the Cleveland Cavaliers have emerged as the heavyweights in the East, one cannot discount the challenge posed by the likes of the Magic, the 76ers and the Toronto Raptors. Over in the West, we foresee an epic clash between the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and a surging San Antonio Spurs squad.
The Oklahoma City Thunder entered this postseason as the team to beat after an impressive 64-win regular season. As the defending champions, the Thunder rely heavily on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the league’s MVP and top scorer. They made quick work of their 1st round, sweeping the Phoenix Suns 4-0, and establishing themselves as the favorites to return to the Finals.
However, the San Antonio Spurs have become the ultimate wild card. Led by the generational talent of Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have rapidly transformed from a rebuilding team into a defensive juggernaut. While they finished lower in the regular-season standings, their playoff form has been undeniable. My prediction sees the Spurs and Thunder clashing in the Western Conference Finals because San Antonio possesses the outlandish length and rim protection needed to neutralize OKC’s driving lanes. The Spurs and the Thunder met 5 times this regular season, and the Spurs took a 4-1 advantage over the solid OKC Thunder. That said, this year’s iteration of the Spurs is much improved. Plus, the “Wemby factor” is real; his ability to alter shots without fouling gives the Spurs a unique advantage in a seven-game series against a guard-heavy Thunder lineup.
In the East, the narrative has shifted toward a possible collision between the perennial powerhouse Boston Celtics, and the stacked, yet unpredictable New York Knicks. But first, the Celtics will have to dispose of a pesky Philadelphia 76ers who have just forced a Game 7 in their own 1st round 7-game series. Whoever survives the Celts-Sixers clash will face off with the Knicks. The winner will tangle with the Cleveland Cavaliers, last year’s regular season top-seed, but who turned out to be the league’s biggest heartache. A Celtics-Knicks face-off looks interesting as they ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively in the East’s regular season. If the Pistons fall to the Magic, the Celtics – Knicks winner will be favored to reach the NBA Finals.
The New York Knicks, perennial Eastern Conference playoff regulars, have the talent and the depth to take this all the way to the NBA Finals. If Jaylen Brunson involves his other teammates in contributing to the scoring load, he will tow the team to the Eastern Conference title. With a roster-full of scorers, the Knicks can overcome the opposition with their scoring unpredictability. Last year’s debacle to the Indiana Pacers was a great learning point for the Knicks. Take much of the scoring load away from Brunson, and the Knicks will move mountains.
While the Thunder and the Celtics are great bets, the momentum is swinging toward San Antonio and New York. The Spurs have shown they can beat the Thunder in a playoff setting, and Wembanyama’s continued growth over the last 3 years has been exponential. I predict the Spurs will outlast the defending champions OKC Thunder in an epic Western Conference Finals. They will not only reach the Finals but go all the way, capturing the title. A 2024 Rookie of the Year, Wemby is changing not just the trajectory of shots, he is changing the game. Defensively, offensively, and even psychologically. Given a talented support crew led by the veteran all-star D’Aaron Fox, fellow Rookie of the Year awardee Stephon Castle (2025), 6th Man of the Year awardee Keldon Johnson (2026), the team has the depth and the talent to match the Knicks. Their combination of a dominant force in Wemby, plus a solid support crew imbued with a great disciplined culture mirrors what could be the start of a new dynasty. After the Thunder dominated the finals last year, talks of a Thunder dynasty started circulating. But some held their breath and talked about the coming of a new force, the coming of a new Wemby. In a league defined by parity, the Spurs are ready to reclaim their throne.
